SN College project in organic photonics gets recognition

Staff Reporter

KOLLAM: The Condensed Matter Physics Laboratory attached to the SN College here has made a landmark achievement in Organic Photonics. Intel Corporation and the Department of Science and Technology have selected the project in this connection under the `Initiative for Research and Innovations in Science'. At a press conference here on Friday, the research group leader of the laboratory P. Pradeep said, through their research recently, natural rubber was successfully developed into an optical recording medium. It meant that rubber films had the potential to be used as cost-effective and efficient material in computer memories and holography.

Three years ago, the laboratory under Dr. Pradeep's leadership had demonstrated for the first time that radiation vulcanised natural rubber latex could be developed into organic semi-conductors and highly conducting materials. The laboratory has two patents for that. Dr. Pradeep said the latest trend in electronics the world over was organic electronics. That meant a change from costly silicon components to light weight and flexible electronic components made by using polymers and plastics.

Another important research project undertaken by Dr. Pradeep's team was the development of natural rubber into a biomaterial to be used in drug delivery system. This has been one of the priority areas of the Department of Biotechnology.

The laboratory has undertaken research involving the problems of the local population. In this connection, studies on the effect of high background radiations from the monazite bearing sea coast area of Kerala on the human population there has been undertaken.
