Sanitation drive

ALAPPUZHA: The Ambalappuzha SNDP Union will launch a sanitation drive in the taluk on Sunday in the wake of the chikungunya outbreak in the district, union secretary K.N. Premanandan and president Kalavoor N. Gopinath said. The union had earmarked Rs.1 lakh for mosquito eradication works, Mr. Premanandan said. Two arrested on charges of cheating

THRISSUR: The Guruvayur police arrested two persons on charges of cheating people on the pretext of offering loans. They have been identified as Kaniamparambil Sadiqu, 38, and Maju, 33, both hailing from Ambalappuzha in Alappuzha district. They were arrested following a complaint from a resident in Guruvayur. The complainant said the duo had taken Rs.25,000 from him on the pretext of offering a loan. — Staff Reporter

Birth anniversary of Thirunellur

KOLLAM: The birth anniversary of poet Thirunellur Karunakaran will be observed here on Sunday. A programme named `Anthimayangumbol,' highlighting the poems of Thirunellur, has been organised in this connection at the Olai ATSK Gardens on the banks of the Ashtamudi Lake. Friends, students and fans of the poet will gather to recite his poems and enact scenes from them. On the occasion, the Kollam Public Library would bring out a booklet on Thirunellur. Poets Kureepuzha Sreekumar, Chathannur Mohan, Girish Puliyur, Perumpuzha Gopalakrishnan and Shanthan will recite poems. — Staff Reporter

Course in networking

KSRTC staff stage dharnas

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The pro-CITU KSRT Employees' Association staged dharnas in front of the Transport Bhavan and workshops and units of the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) in different parts of the State on Saturday in protest against "the stand adopted by the management against the Government's policies and decisions." The protestors demanded the ending of service cancellations, withdrawal of the management's `Tughlaq model' reforms, announcement of reforms only after talks with the recognised union, immediate talks on pay revision, and functioning of the management in a democratic manner, among other things. — Special Correspondent

Krishna Iyer hospitalised

KOCHI: The jurist V.R. Krishna Iyer suffered a fall at his home early Saturday morning and was admitted to the Medical Trust Hospital here.

Mr. Iyer, 91, who hurt his left arm and back, was hospitalised at 3.30 a.m. Hospital authorities said the injuries were not of serious nature.

Mr. Iyer was to have attended a YMCA function at Aluva on Saturday along with political leaders K. R. Gouri and K. Karunakaran. The YMCA, as part of its celebrations of `Fifty years of Kerala,' had announced awards for the two surviving members of the first elected Government of Kerala, Mr. Iyer and Ms. Gouri. Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee, who inaugurated the Aluva function, called on Mr. Iyer in hospital in the morning. Mr. Chatterjee and his wife, Renu Chatterjee, spent 20 minutes with Mr. Iyer. — Special Correspondent

`Kerala's claim unacceptable'

Madurai: Making it clear that Kerala's claim over the Mullaperiyar dam is unacceptable, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi has said the State will pursue the next course of action after the elections to the local bodies. Responding to questions on the stalemate over the issue here on Saturday, he said the Government would convene an all-party meeting and consider all available options before taking a decision. The Chief Minister said the State did not accept the statute enacted by Kerala to circumvent the Supreme Court order passed on February 27. — UNI

`Ensure quality of fertilizer'

Thiruvananthapuram: The Agriculture Director has asked dealers to ensure quality of bone powder brought for sale in the State before distributing it to farmers. In an official press note here on Saturday, he asked the dealers to make use of the services of fertilizer inspectors for the purpose. This follows the detection of low-quality bone powder. By the time the quality report of the powder is received, its distribution gets over with the farmers paying a high price for low quality fertilizer. — Special Correspondent
