Five more die in Cherthala

ALAPPUZHA: Five persons died in Cherthala taluk of suspected Chikungunya on Saturday. The toll in the district has risen to 97. The dead are A. Rukmini, 67, Thekke Kattuveli, Charamangalam panchayat; Thankappan, 75, Peediakkal house, Thuravoor panchayat; A.S. Bhaskaran, 75, Appanath house, Kadakkarappalli panchayat; Janaki, 71, Thottukandam Nikarth house, Pattanakkad panchayat; and Madhavan, 72, Kandanaveli house, Kanjikkuzhy panchayat.

Rs. 97 lakh sanctioned

Our Thiruvananthapuram Special Correspondent adds:

The Government has sanctioned an additional amount of Rs. 97 lakh for the control and management of the chikungunya outbreak. A sum of Rs. 2 lakh each is to be given to the DMOs of Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Palakkad, Malappuram, Wayanad, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Kottayam, Kannur and Kasaragod districts for taking emergency preventive measures. An additional amount of Rs.5 lakh has been sanctioned for the coordination of the State-level activities, preventive measures and for the expenditure connected with the Central team's visit. The DHS is to be provided Rs.20 lakh for buying fogging machines and for related expenditure.

The Government has also sanctioned Rs.2 lakh to the Medical Education Director for conducting studies in the disease-affected places and for related expenditure.

A sum of Rs.10 lakh each has been sanctioned to the Directors of the Indian Systems of Medicine, Ayurveda Medical Education Director and the Driector of Homoeopathy for conducting medical camps and distributing medicines. The Public Relations Director has been sanctioned an amount of Rs.20 lakh for producing a TV spot and for televising it. Revenue Minister K. P. Rajendran has sanctioned Rs.10 lakh as emergency assistance from the calamity relief fund for the cleaning of the Cherthala Canal (AS Canal).
