KOCHI: Bhavan's Vidya Mandir, Girinagar, will represent Kochi region in the national finals of The Hindu -Young World Quiz, which will be held on November 14 in Madurai.

The team, comprising Ajay Parasuram and Sivaprasad Menon, scored 60 points at the Kochi regional round, which was held on Saturday at the Toc-H Public School. Sivaprasad said it was quite unbelievable to be one among the winners of the event. "My morale was quite low after losing a recent quizzing event. This evening, I feel that I am on cloud nine, winning one of India's most prestigious quiz events," he said.

Teams from the Hari Sri Vidyamandir School, Thrissur, won the second and third positions. The team comprising Balu S. and Harisankar J. won 56 points. The team consisting of Francis Anto Padikkara and Akhil Vijay scored 41 points. The other finalists, all from Kochi, were Vidyodaya School, Thevakkal; Chinmaya Vidyalaya, Vaduthala and Bhavan's Vidya Mandir, Elamakkara. A huge cache of gifts and cash prizes awaited the winning teams. Other students, who took part in the event, were also given cash prizes and gifts.

Cricketer S. Sreesanth was the chief guest at the event and Ernakulam Range DIG K. Padmakumar was the guest of honour. There was participation from 230 teams, representing 84 schools in Ernakulam, Thrissur, Idukki, Kottayam and Alappuzha.

Participants were all praise for the meticulous way in which the quiz was arranged and the questions asked by quizmaster V.V. Ramanan. The role played by Bharat Venkat Epur of Quizwalahs, the event managers, in enlivening the programme was also well appreciated. The six finalists were chosen based on their performance in the written preliminary round, where 25 questions were asked. Aimed at involving members of the audience in the programme, questions were posed to them too.

In the `Headlines round,' a dateline clue was given first, followed by a newsline clue, if needed. The teams had to suggest the apt headline. To the dateline `Trivandrum, January 4, 1750,' was given the newsline `Royalty submits to Divinity.' `Marthanda Varma dedicates kingdom to Sri Padmanabha' was judged the apt headline.

For the dateline Liverpool, October 6, 1962, the headline was `Beatles release first single.' For Chirayankeezhu, April 8, 1926, the newsline was `Record-breaking thespian's worldly appearance' and the headline was `Prem Nasir is born.' In the `Topsy-Turvy round,' an answer would be given, for which a suitable question had to be asked. The `Jumbled Jackpot round' was the buzzer round and `Spectrum' an audio-visual round. In `Mera Bharat Mahan round,' questions solely on India were asked. Then came `End Game,' signalling the end of the event.

Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Thrissur, was judged the best outstation team and Bishop Moore Vidyapith, Mavelikkara, the second best outstation team. Kendriya Vidyalaya, Kadavanthra, won the prize for the best team name — The Cochin Falcons, followed by Greets Public School, Kaloor — Quiz De Basanti and Sivagiri Vidyaniketan, Kochi — Maze Breakers.
