Thiruvananthapuram: The committees set up at the district and panchayat levels and voluntary organisations have started working actively for providing medicines to those affected by chikungunya and checking the spreading of the disease. An official press note said here on Saturday that the district-level committees, with the District Collector as chairman and the District Medical Officer as convener, were organising awareness programmes and taking preventive measures. They were providing help to the panchayat-level committees. The activities of the governmental and non-governmental organisations were being monitored. The panchayat-level activities were being carried out on a war footing. The president of the grama panchayat was the chairman and the medical officer of the primary health centre the convener of these committees. The members of the panchayat-level committees and those of the district level, who were supposed to associate with them, were taking an active role in the work assigned to them. The panchayat-level committees were in charge of disposing of wastewater and waste material.
