Gowda to visit Hassan

HASSAN: Former Prime Minister and Hassan MP H.D. Deve Gowda will visit Hassan on Monday and participate in the District Vigilance and Monitoring Committee meeting at the Zilla Panchayat building, Deputy Commissioner in-charge F.R. Jamaadar has said. In a release here on Saturday, he said legislators representing eight Assembly constituencies, presidents of taluk and zilla panchayats and heads of various Government departments would participate. Progress on various development programmes, including Sampoorna Grameena Rojgar Yojana, Swarna Jayanthi Grama Swarojgar Yojana, Indira Awas Yojana and Pradhana Manthri Gram Sadak Yojana, would be reviewed on the occasion, he added. — Staff Correspondent

Killed in accident

HASSAN: Shantharaju (50) of Ballupet was killed when the scooter he was riding was involved in a collision with a motorcycle that was coming from Sakleshpur, near Bharatavalli Cross in Sakleshpur taluk on Friday night. A case has been registered by the police. — Staff Correspondent

Two held

GULBARGA: The Gulbarga City Police and the Crime Branch sleuths on Saturday arrested two youths and recovered gold and silver ornaments worth over Rs. 2 lakh. Police arrested Shivanand Shisharanappa Sangolgi and Amit Arvind Biradar hailing from Shahbazar locality in the city and recovered gold ornaments weighing 215 grams, silver ornaments weighing 473 grams and Rs. 4,100. Police said the duo had confessed that they broke into three houses in Shahbazar locality and stole the valuables. They have been remanded in judicial custody. — Special Correspondent

Raichur: The Raichur police arrested Lingamma and recovered gold ornaments worth Rs. 95,000 from her, which she allegedly stole from a house in AIR locality in Raichur city on Friday. She has been remanded in judicial custody. Police said the accused was a servant at the house of Sudheer, a bank employee. The Sadar Bazar police have registered a case.

Man ends life

Raichur: Subbappa (26) reportedly committed suicide by consuming pesticide at a field in the limits of Anehosur village of Lingsugur taluk on Friday. The Lingsugur police have registered a case. — Staff Correspondent

Kumaraswamy to tour Dharwad district

HUBLI: Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy will tour Dharwad district on October 10 and 11, during which he will be staying overnight at Navalli village in Navalgund taluk. According to a press release, Mr. Kumaraswamy will reach Navalli village from Badami on October 10 at 7.30 p.m. and stay overnight. On October 11, after participating in programmes in Navalli, he will leave for Annigeri at 10 a.m. At Annigeri the Chief Minister will participate in foundation laying and inauguration of some projects and reach Basapur by 11.45 a.m. Mr. Kumaraswamy will reach Navalgund at 12.30 p.m. to inaugurate a few development works. From there he will go to Tirlapur, Javur, Hamsi, Byalal, Gumagol and Shirur villages before reaching Hubli. The Chief Minister will leave for Bangalore by Rani Channamma Express train at 10.15 p.m., the release added. — Staff Correspondent

Water supply to be hit today

HUBLI: Owing to repair work on the main pipeline connected to the reservoir at Ayodhyanagar in Old Hubli, water supply will be disrupted in ward numbers 62, 63, 64 and 65 of Hubli on Sunday, Assistant Executive Engineer, Karnataka Water Supply and Sewerage Board has said in a press release.

Power shutdown

HUBLI: Power supply will be affected between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. on Tuesday owing to work on charging the underground power cable network in Lokappana Hakkala, Hosur, Vidyanagar and surrounding areas, Hubli Electricity Supply Company has said in a press releasehere on Saturday. — Staff Correspondent

Farmer ends life in Honnali taluk

DAVANGERE: A farmer committed suicide at Suragondanakoppa village in Honnali taluk on Saturday. According to the police, Karibasappa, 60, had taken a loan of Rs. 80,000 from a financial institution, which he could not repay because of crop failure.

Many farmers have committed suicide in Davangere district over the past three years. — Staff Correspondent

Congress seeks probe into violence

BANGALORE: The Congress on Saturday demanded that the Government should order a judicial inquiry into the violence in Dakshina Kannada district.

Addressing presspersons, Kagodu Thimmappa, Roshan Baig and H. Vishwanath, all former Ministers, held the Government responsible for the escalation of violence.

In a statement, Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee president M. Mallikarjun Kharge alleged that the Government had failed to maintain law and order in Mangalore, Surathkal and Ullal. He accused the BJP, which is part of the coalition government, of trying to divide people on communal lines to gain political advantage.

Bangalore: Air Commodore Rajiv Mittal has assumed command at the Air Force Technical College. He was commissioned in the Indian Air Force in the Aeronautical Engineering branch in 1975. Before assuming command, he was the Chief Instructor at the college. — Staff Reporter

Photography exhibition

MYSORE: As many as 141 zoo and wildlife photographs will be displayed at an exhibition being organised at the Mysore zoo from October 8 to 14 as part of Wildlife Week.

According to a statement from G.V. Ranga Rao, executive director of the zoo, the celebrations were slated to be held from October 1 to 7. But owing to the Dasara festival, these could be organised only from October 8 to 14.
