Coimbatore: The South India Small Spinners' Association plans to prepare a vision document for small and medium-scale textile units. The details of how to go about the statement would be finalised by the association soon, says its newly elected president, R. Kuppusamy. The association has over 400 members. "Even those who have medium or small-scale units should be helped to export," he said. They could jointly identify potential export markets even for cotton yarn and take up orders for bulk quantities.
Awareness
However, what was needed primarily was awareness among the units. They should be guided to equip themselves for such orders. Most of the small-spinners now supply yarn to the local market. "They should integrate their capacities, even if it be for small volumes, and have weaving or knitting facilities," he said. In case of small mills, the units now usually have 8,000 to 12,000 spindles as it helps them go in for modernisation. Setting up processing units would be expensive and hence the units are being asked to look at weaving or knitting.
Employment
Another project that the association would focus on was manpower training. Textile and clothing were sectors that offered employment even to unskilled workers. Those who had completed class X normally went in for three-year or even two-year technical courses. They should be able to join short-term courses that would help them get jobs in textile units. Colleges and polytechnics should consider such programmes too, he says. "The industry can support such programmes through jobs for successful candidates. The Government should also encourage such programmes," he said.
