Chinese national rescued

Staff Reporter

KOCHi: Zhank Zhao Li, 27, a Chinese national who apparently jumped out of a Chinese cargo vessel late on Friday night was rescued by fishermen off the Lakshadweep Islands. He was brought to the Fort Kochi police station on Saturday around 2 p.m.

The police said the Chinese national initially claimed that his ship had collided with another vessel and that he was trying to save himself. On being questioned further, he confessed to having jumped off the vessel after a quarrel with his captain. He was rescued at about 11 p. m. on Friday.

The Chinese embassy has confirmed that no Chinese vessel had faced any contingency, an official of the Coast Guard said.
