MUMBAI: The Maharashtra Government, the Union Government and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation signed here on Saturday an agreement for implementation of modernisation projects worth Rs. 5,548 crore of Mumbai metropolis under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNURM). The agreement was signed by the officials of the three entities at the official residence of Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh in the presence of Union Petroleum Minister Murali Deora, Minister of State in the PMO, Prithviraj Chavan, and Mayor Datta Dalavi. The projects include Mumbai Sewage Disposal Phase II having an outlay of Rs. 1,896 crore, Middle Vaitarna Water Supply (Rs. 1,369.39 crore), the Mithi river development (Rs. 1,284.35 crore), and the Mumbai basic civic amenities project (Rs. 998 crore). The Middle Vaitarna project would augment water supply to Mumbai by 455 million litres a day. While the Union Government would grant 35 per cent of its outlay, the State Government would provide 15 per cent and the municipal corporation will raise the balance 50 per cent by issuing bonds. The sewage disposal project would raise the sewage disposal from 60 per cent to 80 per cent and the Mithi river development was to check floods. The allocations are in addition to Rs. 1,200 crore sanctioned by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for the storm water drainage project.
