KOCHI: The Corporation of Cochin has convened a meeting of representatives of political parties, trade and business bodies, youth movements, NGOs, hotel and restaurant owners, etc., at 2 p.m. on October 10 to launch a cleanliness drive in the city in the wake of the spread of chikungunya. A meeting of Principals of colleges and higher secondary schools, representatives of the Navy, Police and Fire and Rescue Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday. Both the meetings will be held at the Council Hall of the Corporation, said a press release here. The Mayor has appealed to political parties, chambers of commerce, trade and business bodies, NGOs, police, hotel and restaurant owners, hospitals, stall owners, colleges, NSS volunteers and the public to take up urgent cleaning of drains, storm water canals and clearing of bushes. Meanwhile, the Corporation of Cochin has decided to engage 350 casual labourers to conduct an anti-mosquito drive in addition to the 850 contingent employees. The decision to engage more hands for the drive was taken at a meeting of the steering committee, chaired by Mayor Mercy Williams. The meeting also decided to find a temporary space to dispose of waste till the Brahmapuram waste disposal facility is ready, said a press release here.
