``DMK fulfilling promise on providing jobs''

Karunanidhi hints at legal action against Jayalalithaa for her statement

CHENNAI : The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam Government within a few months of its existence took steps to provide employment to over one lakh persons, Chief Minister and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam president M. Karunanidhi said on Sunday.

Giving details of the appointment to various posts in government service, he said that at the time of the Assembly elections his party had given an assurance that jobs would be given to three lakh youngsters initially.

"We have come here to seek your support that will be an endorsement of our functioning and that will enable us to fulfil the remaining promises," he told a public meeting in Vallalar Nagar in north Chennai, held as part of the campaign for the local body elections.

Emphasising the need for electing Democratic Progressive Alliance candidates at the local body level too, Mr Karunanidhi said that after the DMK Government assumed office, relationship with the Centre had been cordial. A similar situation would prevail if DPA nominees emerged victorious in the local body polls.

Assuring the voters that all welfare measures of the Government would continue, the DMK leader criticised the previous All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam regime's handling of tsunami relief.

Only after the DMK came to power were many of the affected provided relief, Mr. Karunanidhi said.

Criticising the AIADMK leader Jayalalithaa for the language she used against him in her statement issued earlier in the day, Mr Karunanidhi hinted at taking legal action against her.

Arcot N. Veerasamy, DMK treasurer and Electricity Minister, said the State Government announced dearness allowance hike for its employees within 20 days of the Centre's move.

Public Works Minister Durai Murugan said when the AIADMK was in power, chaos prevailed at the Chennai Corporation Council meetings.

Parithi Ilamvazhuthi, Information and Publicity Minister, said that during Mr Karunanidhi's regime, the State would attain the top slot in the country.
