R.K. Narayan centenary seminar in Mysore

A quiet three-day intellectual exchange

Bangalore: Mysore is getting set to mark the birth centenary of R.K. Narayan, the Mysorean who went on to become a writer celebrated across the world. In keeping with the spirit of the gentle storyteller who abhorred overstatement and excess, it will be a quiet three-day intellectual exchange on his body of work.

International event

The international event, starting on October 10, is being held by the Sahitya Akademi at the Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL) auditorium in Manasagangotri. It will be inaugurated at 10 a.m. on Tuesday by eminent writer Keki N. Daruwalla and the introductory address will be delivered by the Indian Association for Commonwealth Literature and Language Studies chairperson Harish Trivedi.

The first session will have Shashi Deshpande, Neelam Saran Gour, and T.S. Satyan paying tribute to Narayan. Editor-in-chief of The Hindu , N. Ram, who has co-authored a biography of Narayan with Susan Ram, will address one of the sessions. Narayan's style, narrative technique, and notions of roots, are among the range of subjects that will be discussed by scholars including Brinda Bose, Nancy Batty, Lakshmi Holmstrom, Makarand Paranjape, P. Ranga Rao, Arshia Sattar, Judith Brown and Nandini Saha.

In one special session on October 11, The Guide, both the book and the film, will be discussed. This will be followed by the screening of the film. For details on the seminar call 080-22245152.
