"Evolve right treatment"

MADURAI: A joint approach by rheumatologists and orthopaedic surgeons is essential to arrest the progress of rheumatoid arthritis among patients and prevent permanent morbidity, city-based orthopaedic surgeon A. Devadoss said here on Sunday.

Addressing a symposium on `Rheumatology-orthopaedic interface' here, he said that many patients were suffering from the crippling disease of rheumatoid arthritis and severe deformity of joints was taking place.

Disease-modifying anti-rheumatoid drugs were now available to arrest the progress of the disease and effective treatment could be given to patients.

He was speaking at the symposium organised by the Institute of Orthopaedic Research and Accident Surgery, in association with the Tamil Nadu State branch of the Indian Rheumatology Association and Tamil Nadu Orthopaedic Association.

Stating that a meeting of both rheumatologists and orthopaedic surgeons would be useful to evolve the right treatment methods, Dr. Devadoss said that if both the specialists came together the patient would return to normal life early.

V. Krishnamoorthy, State president of Indian Rheumatology Association, said that orthopaedic surgeons and rheumatologists were like two limbs and a proper interaction between them should be there in dealing with patients.

Experts in rheumatoid arthritis management, A. Subramaniam and CP. Rajendran, and the Head of Department of Rheumatology and Clinical Immunology at Army Hospital in New Delhi, Col. Ved Chaturvedi, were among those who addressed the delegates in different sessions.
