MYSORE It is the premier institute in generating speech and audiology specialists that had witnessed shortage of these experts. From a humble beginning in 1966, the All India Institute of Speech and Hearing (AIISH) here has grown in prestige and responsibility by placing its illustrious alumni in this specialty field across the globe.

The institute will be celebrating the 40th anniversary of the initiation of academic programmes on Tuesday on its Panchavati premises. Having started with one postgraduate programme in 1966 with 10 students, the institute now offers a range of diploma, graduate, postgraduate and doctoral courses in the area of speech and hearing besides short-term courses. So far, the institute has produced 870 graduates, 564 postgraduates and 100 doctoral degree holders. Sources in the institute told The Hindu that about three-fourths of the alumni worked in various field and community service projects abroad.

According to a press release, the AIISH registers over 13,000 new patients every year and therapeutic services are offered to over 5,000 patients. Besides the routine clinical activities, the institute offers specialty clinical facilities such as the listening training unit, alternative and augmentative communication unit, cranio-facial unit, professional voice care unit and forensic voice analysis laboratory.

To coincide with its 40th anniversary of the initiation of academic programmes, the institute will start autism spectrum disorder unit on Tuesday.

Minister for Health and Family Welfare R. Ashok would inaugurate the 40th anniversary celebrations. Vice-Chancellor of Mysore University J. Shashidhar Prasad, Indira Gandhi National Open University Vice-Chancellor S.C. Garg, Mysore MP C.H. Vijayshankar and institute director Vijaylakshmi Basavaraj will take part in the celebrations.
