Vivek Shokeen advances

Kamesh Srinivasan

NEW DELHI: Yannic Nelord failed to capitalise on an opening and lost in three sets to the third seed Vivek Shokeen in the first round of the DSCL National tennis championship at the DLTA Complex here on Monday.

It was an early alarm for the strapping Shokeen as he was down a set and a break before he pulled himself up to record a 3-6, 6-4, 6-1 victory.

By his own admission, Nelord had tried injudiciously to serve and volley in the tenth game of the second set when he had a gamepoint and failed to put away a volley. He allowed his game to fall apart thereafter even as Shokeen, one of the favourites, stepped up his game to sail into the second round where he will meet Sandeep Choudhary.

In another lively encounter under the floodlights, local lad Wrik Ganguly prevailed over qualifier Punna Vikas of Andhra Pradesh 7-6(5), 2-6, 7-6(4).

In the women's section, the fifth seed Asha Nandakumar was knocked out by Madura Ranganathan. The second seed Sandhya Nagaraj, who had recently won a $10,000 ITF women's tournament in Spain, stopped the National junior champion, the towering Poojashree Venkatesh for the loss of three games.
