RESTIVE: Farmers, agitating for a better deal for their produce, eagerly waiting at the main gate of the Collectorate at Eluru on Monday.
ELURU: Farmers staged a protest demonstration at the district Collectorate here on Monday under the banner of the Rytanga Samakhya, demanding implementation of the recommendation made by Swaminadhan, Chairman, National Agricultural Commission, with respect to price fixation for paddy.
Paddy price
Recalling that Mr Swaminadhan had favoured procurement of paddy by Government agencies from farmers at a price 50 higher than the minimum support price (MSP) fixed by the Government, Samakhya president Maganti Sitarama Swamy demanded that the Government implement the recommendation forthwith. The tenant farmers were currently incurring losses to the tune of Rs 2,000-3,000 per acre even after disposing of their produce for a price fixed by the Government, thanks to the mounting production cost, he regretted. He urged the Government to fix the price of paddy per quintal at Rs 900 so as to give farmers a better deal. Similarly, the protesters wanted the price of sugarcane to be fixed at Rs 1800 per quintal and Rs 600 per quintal for maize.
