Huge scope for jobs in BPO sector: executive

Staff Reporter

TAMBARAM : There was tremendous scope for fresh graduates in the Business Process Outsourcing sector, where demand for qualified professionals was increasing day by day in this growing sector, according to S. Sundar Raman, associate vice president of Sutherland Global Services.

Delivering the keynote address after inaugurating The Hindu Business Line Club at Dhanalakshmi College of Engineering at Naduveerappattu near Tambaram, Mr. Sundar Raman said though the BPO sector was growing in other countries too, such as Mexico, Brazil and China, India had outscored them because of its large pool of highly skilled and educated youth.

The number of people employed in IT enabled services and BPO sector was 1.7 lakh in 2003 and it was estimated to be around 4.7 lakh by the end of 2006.

S. Sridhar, assistant regional general manager (Circulation) of The Hindu, said that last year about 6,000 students from 64 colleges had enrolled as members of the club; they had organised 50 lectures and planned to reach more than 15,000 students this year.
