Baglihar row verdict likely by year-end

Nirupama Subramanian

ISLAMABAD: A World Bank-appointed neutral expert has shared the draft verdict on the Baglihar dispute with both India and Pakistan at a recent hearing. He is expected to deliver his final verdict by the year-end after getting their comments on the draft.

Pakistan said water expert Raymond Lafitte had shown the "draft final expert determination" to representatives of both countries. The Swiss national was appointed in May 2005 to resolve the dispute over the 400-MW project India is building on the Chenab in Jammu and Kashmir. He has asked for the comments of both countries on the draft by October 26, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Tasnim Aslam said here on Monday.
