Harkat lifer escapes from Guwahati hospital

Sushanta Talukdar

Guwahati: Nurul Amin, a life convict and Harkat-ul-Ansar militant involved in the kidnapping of an Amercian and three British nationals in New Delhi in 1994, escaped from the Guwahati Medical College Hospital on Monday. Inspector-General of Police (Special Branch) Khagen Sharma, talking to The Hindu , blamed the guards, who were escorting Amin from the hospital to the Guwahati jail, of being "callous and complacent." Police sources said the lone escort had gone to a toilet in the hospital, leaving unguarded the militant, who hails from Lower Assam's Nalbari district.

During his stay in Delhi in 1994, Nurul Amin, together with five other Harkat-ul-Ansar activists, three of them Pakistanis, kidnapped of the foreigners to secure the release of terrorist Maulana Masood Azar. The American and British nationals were later rescued from Connaught Place in New Delhi.

(Azar was however released by the Government during the Kandahar hostage crisis in 1999.)

In April 2002 a Delhi court awarded death sentence to the three Pakistani Harkat activists and life imprisonment to the other three. Amin was arrested here in 1999.
