BANGALORE: To boost the morale of B.Sc. students, the Department of Science and Technology has decided to offer Prof. C.V. Raman scholarship/visiting fellowship to 800 students from this academic year. Addressing presspersons here on Tuesday, Minister for Science and Technology Ramachandra Gowda said 80 students from colleges affiliated to each university in the State would be selected for the scholarship on the basis of merit. There are 10 universities in the State.
Funds released
He said selected students would be given scholarship of Rs. 3,000 a year during the three-year course. In the final year, the fellowship holders will visit and interact with the faculty of reputed science institutes such as Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, and Central Food Technological Research Institute, Mysore. The Government has released Rs. 10 lakh for the purpose, Mr. Gowda said. Basic science courses have been neglected, as large number of students prefer engineering and medical courses after the Pre-University examination. There were shortage of teachers to teach physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics in schools and colleges, Mr. Gowda said.
