Stressing the need for hygiene

The State-wide sanitation drive in the wake of the outbreak of chikungunya has increased public awareness in Kannur of the health hazards involved in the current practice of disposing of wastes. Some voluntary organisations as well as political parties have taken the cue from the district administration's initiative and embarked on sanitation drives at the Civil Station.

People are realising that disposing of household garbage and wastes from slaughterhouses in public places, including wetlands, riverbanks and roadsides, is hazardous to health.

One hopes that the massive sanitation drive here will not be confined to October 13.
