Do Keralites need to change their perception for combating unemployment? Many people feel so, especially since there are 49 lakh unemployed in the State. Journalist T.V.R. Shenoy, a Keralite based outside the State, spoke about the attitude of Malayalis towards certain jobs at an interactive session organised by the Malabar Chamber of Commerce here on Monday. An average Malayali has an aversion to physical work, including skilled and semi-skilled labour. This makes him unemployable for many jobs, Mr. Shenoy said. "Our mindset is still of the past. We still believe achieving mastery over English and ability to calculate without the help of calculators can get us jobs. For several years these skills provided mass employment. But not so now, " Mr. Shenoy said. Despite acquiring a degree, many youngsters do not land jobs. Skilled jobs are available in the construction industry and many more will come up in other sectors as well. Unless the youth make themselves employable, the State would not be able to make economic progress, he said.
