PALAKKAD: Lalgudi G.J.R. Krishnan, violinist, has said that classical art forms in the country were facing a great deal of competition from modern art forms and the visual media.'' Talking to pressmen here on Tuesday, Mr. Krishnan, son of great violinist Lalgudi Jayaraman, said that the ultimate satisfaction for an artiste was when he/she represented the classical form without diluting it to the level of the rasikas (listeners). The level of the listeners must be taken to the level of the art,'' he said. G.J.R. Vijayalakshmi, his sister, said that they represented the Lalgudi school of Violin. They were born in the lineage of an illustrious disciple of the great saint and composer Thyagaraja. They were meticulously groomed by one other than Lalgudi Jayaraman. "We have to preserve the traditional classical forms and the essence of its style. But it is not a rigid presentation of Lalgudi style that we follow during concerts. Thus each concert is a real challenge to present it in chaste Carnatic music style," she said. The duo is here to perform at Swaralaya Dance and Music Festival. Mohiniyattom dancer and Director of Natana Kairali Nirmala Panikkar, who also attended the press conference, said that Mohiniyattom, the dance form of Kerala, should be preserved without out losing its rich tradition.
