Corrections and clarifications

* The editorial "The end of `non-proliferation'" (October 10, 2006) stated that on October 9, 2006, North Korea became the eighth country on the planet to announce that it had conducted a nuclear explosive test. A reader says that it should have been "the ninth country", and cites Israel in the list, the others being the United States, the then Soviet Union, the United Kingdom, France, China, India, Pakistan and North Korea. Officially, North Korea is the eighth country. There is no evidence that Israel has ever carried out a nuclear test, although many observers have speculated that a suspected nuclear explosion in the southern Indian Ocean on September 22, 1979 was a joint South African-Israeli test. It was "detected" by the VELA 6911 satellite. On April 20, 1997, an article appeared in the Israeli Ha'aretz daily newspaper, where South African Deputy Foreign Minister Aziz Pahad is reported to have confirmed for the first time that a flare over the Indian Ocean detected by an American satellite in September 1979 was from a nuclear test. The article also said that Israel helped South Africa develop its bomb designs in return for 550 tons of raw uranium and other assistance.

* In "Shift Madurai Police Commissioner: EC" (October 10, 2006), the name of a DMK candidate was misspelt. What was published as "S. Syed Basha" should have been "S. Ghouse Basha". The error was rectified in later editions.

* The sentence in "Jayalalithaa, Vaiko given rousing reception" (Madurai, October 9, 2006, page 3) was: "The leaders arrived at the [Tuticorin] airport by a chartered Dornier-model aircraft of Jackson Airlines at 1.10 p.m., from Madurai." A reader points out that it should have been (the New Delhi-based private operator) Jagson Airlines.

* The heading "Less pilots to fly AIE's Boeing 737" (October 6, 2006) drew this comment from a professor of English. "It should have been `Fewer pilots ... '. `Fewer' is used when something is countable and `less' is used for things uncountable."

* A reader points out that in "Ashok Leyland signs MoU with RAKIA" ("Snippets — Business" page, October 6, 2006), (the northernmost emirate of the UAE) Ras Al Khaimah has been twice misspelt as Ras Al Kharimah.

* A reader points out that the 1996 World Cup semi-final between Australia and the West Indies was played not at Jaipur, as stated in "Brian Lara in India" ("Sport", October 7, 2006), but at Mohali. The West Indies did play a World Cup match at the Sawai Man Singh stadium, Jaipur, but that was in the 1987 edition. It was a league encounter against England, the reader adds. The Sports Desk clarifies that the reader is partly right. However, 10 days before this (the 1996 World Cup semi-final), the West Indies and Australia met at the Sawai Man Singh stadium, Jaipur, in a league encounter.
