ERODE: There is an urgent need for proper roads and drinking water facility in Gobichettipalayam municipality. Almost all roads are in a bad condition. The residents receive water only once in three days. Gobichettipalayam is one of the prestigious municipalities and it was represented by eminent freedom fighter G.S. Laxmana Iyer who was its chairman. Thirty wards in the municipality do not have proper roads and the recent rains have damaged them further. With lots of potholes, vehicle users and the public find it very difficult to use them. Municipal councillor Viswanathan (AIADMK) said: "The road may be laid after the elections." Municipal officials said no contractor was willing to take up work as the cost of materials had gone up. Keeripallam Odai, which starts from Nagarpalayam, flows into Gobichettipalayam town and merges with River Bhavani near Pathy village is an asylum for pigs. Waste water from dwelling houses, business establishments and hotels and lodges flow into the Odai. Though many representations were made to the officials to have the Odai desilted, they are yet to act on them. Thorny bushes have began growing in 159 reserved sites that have been lying vacant. The move to convert them into a park has been pending with the municipal administration because of lack of funds.
