Farmers take out rally

DEMO: Farmers staging demonstration at Bharathi Park in Puducherry on Tuesday seeking settlement of thier demands.

Puducherry: A good number of farmers attached to the CPI-led Farmers' Union took out a procession on Tuesday from Odiansalai and later held a demonstration in front of the Assembly to push their charter of demands. The secretary of the Union, T. Geethanathan, said the farmers wanted among other things waiver of loans the ryots had borrowed from nationalised banks for their farm operations, formulation of growth oriented agricultural policy, incorporation of the suggestions of farmers in the draft Eleventh Plan, steps to procure 6 tmcft of water from Cauvery to enable farmers of Karaikal to carry on their agricultural activities without hindrance and hike in procurement prices of milk.

The Union also wanted the Centre to retract the Seeds Act and the amendment to the Electricity Act. The high-level committee constituted by the Government here to address the grievances of farmers should hold its meeting periodically. Women farmers also participated in the demonstration.

Earlier the CPI legislator, R Viswanathan, addressed the demonstrators justifying their demands.
