This Day That Age
Tributes to the musical attainments of Sri Maharajapuram Viswanatha Iyer and his services to Carnatic music were paid by Mr. P.V. Rajamannar, Chief Justice of the Madras High Court, inaugurating the three-day celebrations organised in connection with his Sashtiabdhapoorthi at the Vani Mahal in Theagarayanagar, Madras, on October 9. Mr. Rajamannar said the most fascinating feature of Sri Viswanatha Iyer's music was his remarkable originality in the treatment of ragas. He was not only a great musician himself, but had also been a great guru. He had trained several musicians, many of whom were now occupying prominent places. Smt. Rukmini Devi said that persons like Sri Maharajapuram Viswanatha Iyer, who preserved their ancient art and culture in its pristine purity, were doing the greatest service to the nation. In connection with the celebrations, there was a music concert by Sri Ariyakudi Ramanuja Iyengar who was accompanied by Sri Papa Venkatramiah on the violin and Sri Palghat Mani Iyer on the mridangam.
