Students seek clemency for Afzal
Special Correspondent
SRINAGAR:
Demonstrations to plead for clemency for Afzal Guru, sentenced to death in the Parliament attack case, continued on Tuesday with hundreds of students staging rallies on the Kashmir University campus.
Several students were injured as police used force to disperse them.
Alleging that Afzal Guru was framed because he was a Kashmiri, the students said they would continue the protests until October 20.
Lathi charge
As the protesters spilled out into the streets, police swung into action.
They resorted to lathi charge and fired tear gas shells causing injuries to several students.
Signature campaign
A signature campaign to save Afzal Guru ended here on Tuesday with a local NGO displaying nearly 14,000 signatures before the media.
"The basic object of the campaign is to register the protest in a peaceful manner against the failure of the Indian legal system," said a signatory, adding that the death sentence did not meet the international standards laid out for a fair trial.
