VELLORE: The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam candidate, Ravi, contesting the local body election (to be held here on Friday) for a councillor in the Vellore Municipality was on Tuesday sentenced by the Assistant Sessions Court here to 10 years RI and ordered to pay a fine of Rs.5,000 for attempting to murder a police inspector. The court also ordered him to pay a fine of Rs.1,000 for each of the two counts, under another Section. According to the prosecution, Ravi brandished a knife at the then Vellore North Inspector (Law and Order), K. Ganesan, and threatened to kill him when the officer along with a police party was returning to the police station after a bomb search in a theatre at the Conslapet bypass road junction here on January 17, 1992. Ravi attempted to stab the Mr. Ganesan for taking steps to cancel his bail order in a previous case of assault on a forest officer, who tried to apprehend him in a sandalwood smuggling case. The accused assaulted three other policemen, Davidnathan, Natarajan and Kothandapani, who tried to restrain him. Disposing of the case on Tuesday, Vellore Assistant Sessions Judge V. Muralisundaram sentenced the accused to 10 years R.I. and to pay a fine of Rs.5,000 and in default to undergo R.I. for one year. When asked whether the conviction would bar Ravi from contesting the polls, Vellore Collector Dharmendra Pratap Yadav told newspersons that there was no question of rejection of his candidature at this stage since there was no conviction against the candidate at the time of scrutiny of his nomination, which was accepted by the Returning Officer.
