Run for a cause - and, of course, fun

Madhur Tankha

NEW DELHI: It is one marathon that brings out a carnival-like atmosphere. Much more than being a collage of incredible stories and emotions, the Hutch Delhi Half Marathon 2006 that will be flagged off in the Capital at 7-30 a.m. this Sunday intends to develop competitive spirit and camaraderie among over 27,000 participants. It also aims to generate a lot of green notes to lend support to a multitude of noble causes.

On Tuesday, the marathon got whole-hearted support from Indian cricket team captain Rahul Dravid himself. Even though Rahul will not be participating in the one-of-its-kind marathon, he had encouraging words to say about the participants and those organising this annual sporting event.

At a press conference, a visibly cheerful Rahul said: "I am delighted to be associated with an event of such great stature. What is even more heartening is the commitment of Hutch Delhi Half Marathon to many charitable events. I believe that the marathon has touched the soul of the city because it is not for one person or community, it is for everybody and anybody, which is clearly evident by the number of registrations that have come in."

Stating that the marathon reflected the spirit and endeavour of the denizens of the Capital, Rahul said: "It not only unites the city but the entire country." He even hinted that once he bids adieu to the game, he might consider participating in the marathon.

Another silver lining of the marathon will be that it will be immortalised by the brush of acclaimed artist Anjolie Ela Menon, who will do a live painting of the marathon. The painting will be auctioned later for a noble cause.

From the dream factories of Bollywood, effervescent actress Juhi Chawla and seasoned baddie Gulshan Grover will participate, besides sports personalities from hockey, tennis and other sports.
