SZ inter-varsity table tennis from tomorrow

Bangalore: The South Zone inter-university table tennis championship for men and women will be conducted here by the BMS College of Engineering from October 12 to 14 under the auspices of the Viswesvaraya Technological University, Belgaum.

The tournament has attracted 40 men's teams and 36 women's teams from Karnataka, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. Around 200 men and 180 women players are expected to participate in the championship.

Former National players G.K.Vishwanath and Usha Sunderraj will inaugurate the tournament and Dr. K. Balaveera Reddy, Vice-Chancellor, VTU, will preside.

MEG `B' posts win

The two Army outfits, MEG `B' and Maratha Light Infantry `B' prevailed in their Deccan Herald-KSHA `A' division hockey championship league matches at the KSHA Stadium here on Tuesday. MEG defeated ITI 3-2. Vivek (20th minute) and Rajendra Kumar (28th) put ITI ahead in the first half after Monappa opened the account for MEG in the 13th minute. But in the second half, MEG dominated. Pruthvi Raj (42nd) and Bojanna (44th) struck in quick succession seal the victory.

In another tie, MLI `B' beat RBI 3-2 after trailing 1-2 at half-time. Vineeth Shah (24th) and Vivek (34th) scored for RBI, while Janardhan (ninth) reduced the margin in the first session. R. Dung Dung converting a penalty stroke to level the scores in the 54th minute, but four minutes later, Manoj Lakra hammered home the match winner for MLI `B'.

Basketball trials

Trials to select the Bangalore University women's basketball team will be held at the Mount Carmel College courts on October 16. The trials were originally scheduled for October 4, but were postponed due to the Karnataka Bandh.
