NEW DELHI: Wild card Kelsey Sundaram of Tamil Nadu demonstrated a compact game with sound basics, good athleticism, impressive court craft and composure, to outgun the seventh-seeded Liza Pereira of Maharashtra 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the first round of the women's section in the DSCL National tennis championship at the DLTA Complex here on Tuesday. In a battle of wits that lasted three hours, in hot, windy and energy-sapping conditions, Kelsey hung on to a positive frame of mind to get the better of the seasoned Liza who was not at her best, though she did try to move her opponent from flank to flank. With a second round against qualifier Kesika Jaipalan, Kelsey can fancy her chances for a place in the quarterfinals, possibly against the fourth seed Sonal Phadke. However, she may have it tough in the junior girls event, in which she will meet the steady Shalini Sahoo in the pre-quarterfinals. The eighth seed in the women's section, Sagarika Phadke was also shown the door by qualifier Deepna Vazirani of Maharashtra. The results: Men (first round): Pratim Parekh bt N. Kiran Kumar 6-4, 7-5; Tushar Liberhan bt Vinod Sridhar 3-6, 7-6(2) retired; Arjun Goutham bt Arnav Jain 6-4, 6-4; Vishnu Vardhan bt Nishank Mishra 6-4, 6-1.
