MACHILIPATNAM: District Collector Navin Mittal on Tuesday said that the ban that came into effect on employment of children of less than 14 years of age as domestic labour and as workers in eateries and restaurants would be strictly enforced in the district. Both the employer and the parents of such children were liable for punishment, which would include imprisonment ranging from three months to one year besides a penalty of Rs.10,000 to Rs.20,000. If the children were employed as bonded labour, the employers would be punished with imprisonment up to three years, he said. Addressing a meeting organised by Sarva Siksha Abhiyan, labour department and National Child Labour Programme (NCLP) here, Mr. Mittal said that plans were afoot to declare Krishna district as child labour-free district by January 26. Already 14 mandals in the district had been declared child labour-free. If any person drew the attention of district administration to any child worker in any of these child labour-free mandals, they would be given a nominal incentive of Rs.58. Mr. Mittal said that information about the prevalence of child labour in any part of the district could be passed on to the administration by calling `Child Helpline' number 1098.
