Sania crashes out

BANGKOK: Sania Mirza crashed out of the Bangkok Open, losing to the sixth-seeded American Meghann Shaughnessy 4-6, 4-6 in the first round of the $200,000 Tier III event here on Tuesday.

The Hyderabad girl, who turns 20 next month, gave her higher-ranked opponent a good fight but faltered at crucial stages to make an early exit.

Sania partners Thailand's Tamarine Tanasugarn in the doubles event.

At Moscow, Jan Hernych of the Czech Republic defeated the fifth-seeded Italian Filippo Volandri 6-1, 6-4 in a men's first round match of the Kremlin Cup.Russia's Teimuraz Gabashvili beat Gilles Muller of Luxembourg 7-6(3), 6-3 in another first round clash.
