Calangute (Goa): Japan's N. Ueba Yashiu produced a stirring comeback after trailing in the first two rounds against Singay Phub of Bhutan to force an upset victory in the bantamweight class of the second Asian junior boxing championship which commenced here on Tuesday. Singay opened with a flurry of punches and took a 27-21 lead in the first two rounds of the contest. A straight jab to the head of the Japanese in the third round shook him, but after that the Japanese produced a number of telling blows to reverse the contest. A hook to Singay's head got him to the count of mandatory eight points and soon the Japanese was inching ahead on points. The third round saw him lead by one point and the Bhutan boxer clearly could not stay the distance after leading. The fourth round saw Ueba again earn a count of eight and he won the contest with a fair margin to spare.
Santosh wins
India's silver medallist at the WBC junior meet at Morocco, S. Santosh, found the going tough against T.Q. Viet of Vietnam. The match was marked by a series of huddles and clinches rather than effective punches being landed. Santosh won by nine points and needs to progress a lot to keep up his winning vein. India's Paramjeet scored a blazing 31-13 victory over Chunyungchi of Chinese Taipei. Scoring points at will in the first two rounds, Paramjeet landed his left hooks and straight jabs to the head and chin of Chunyungchi. Kazakhstan's Bashenov and Ilyason showed their class with technical victories over their opponents, while Sri Lanka's Vijeratne downed Md. S. Nordin of Singapore. The results: Lightfly weight(45-48kg): Paramjeet (Ind) bt Chunyungchi (Tpe) 31-13. Flyweight (48-51kg): Akbari (Ira) bt Wan M. Rizwan (Mal, Outclassed in second round). Bantamweight: S. Santosh (Ind) bt T.Q. Viet (Viet, on points 19-10); N. Ueba Yashiu (Jpn) bt Singay Phub (Bhu, on points 54-37); D.S. Vijeratne (SL) bt Md. S.
