JAKARTA: Indonesia's 2,965-metre-high Mount Merapi, which is still under an ``alert'' status, on Tuesday spewed glowing lava over an average distance of 1 km, Antara news agency reported. Since early October, the rumbling volcano has triggered an average of 200 multi-phase tremors daily, Antara quoted an officer at the Merapi Monitoring Post in Kaliurang as saying. ``However, the frequency of the tremors has now dropped to a daily average of about 90 times,'' he said. He said a new lava crater might be developing on the top of the volcano. The new crater was still at a very early stage and could not be visually observed. Mount Merapi, one of the world's most active volcanoes, is located on the border between Java and Yogyakarta provinces. During April-July 2006, the volcano was in the process of eruption and produced heat clouds and lava which damaged farming areas on its southern slopes and killed two persons. Xinhua
