Special shoes for Siachen jawans

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI : Defence Minister Pranab Mukherjee on Tuesday said there would be no delay in procurement of essential equipment and clothing required, especially for jawans, in the extreme Siachen weather.

Addressing jawans at the Base Camp at Zingrulwa, he said special shoes, which could be effective in very low temperatures of up to minus 50 degrees Celsius, would soon be provided to the personnel deployed in the highest battlefield of the world.

At present, the shoes are not effective at less than minus 20 degrees Celsius. Orders were being placed for a new item, Avalung, which would go a long way in saving lives trapped in avalanches. In view the harsh conditions of Siachen, the Government decided to rush full stocks of clothing to these areas before the onset of winter, he said.
