KOZHIKODE: The Paristhithi Samrakshana Samithi, which is agitating against the Kozhikode Corporation's solid waste disposal plant at Njeliyanparambu, will protest against the celebrations being organised to mark the 140th anniversary of the Corporation.
Black flags
Kohinoor Salim, general convener of the samithi, said here on Tuesday that the samithi will be "celebrating the 70th anniversary of Njeliyambaparambu" as a mark of protest. It will hoist 140 black flags around Njeliyanparambu on November 1, when the State celebrates the anniversary of its formation. The protesters alleged that the Corporation was yet to take any step to counter chikungunya threat in the vicinity of the dumping yard even after one local resident, K.P. Abdul Latif, contracted the disease and was under treatment for the past one week. Mr. Salim said the Corporation had not cleared the garbage piled up near Plant 3 at the dumping yard. As many as 11 families shifted from near the dumping yard were staying at the Beypore Community Hall for nearly 14 months now.
Petition filed
The samithi had filed a petition in the High Court. It appealed to the Government to consider the plight of residents in the neighbourhood of Njeliyanparambu when it declared the State "garbage-free" on October 13. Mr. Salim said Kozhikode must be kept out of the purview of the campaign.
