Paulose Mar Militheos to be elected Catholicos-designate

Arrangements made for Malankara association meet on Thursday

PATHANAMTHITTA: A meeting of the Malankara Syrian Christian Association (MSCA), 4,051-member parliament of the Malankara Orthodox Syrian Church, will be held at the St Gregorios Nagar (Parumala seminary premises) on the banks of the Pampa at Parumala near Thiruvalla at 1 p.m. on Thursday.

Addressing a press conference at the Bethany Bishop's House in Thiruvalla on Tuesday, Church secretary Alexander Karackal and organising committee conveners Christophorus Ramban, Biju Oommen and Jacob Thomas Arikupuram said that Thursday's meeting would be an extension of the meeting held on September 21.

Dr. Karackal said that the Church synod and the managing committee had recommended the candidature of Paulose Mar Militheos, Metropolitan of the Kunnamkulam diocese, for the election to the post of Catholicos-designate to be held on Thursday.

The association meeting on Thursday would formally elect Mar Militheos as Catholicos-designate who would be the successor to Baselius Mar Thoma Didymos I as Catholicos of the East and Malankara Metropolitan.

Dr. Karackal said the MSCA would take up the proposal to enhance the strength of the managing committees.

The Malankara Metropolitan, who is also the MSCA president, will preside over the meeting.

A public meeting to felicitate the newly elected Catholicos-designate would be held at the Parumala seminary premises at 3 p.m.

Mar Thoma Metropolitan Philipose Mar Chrysostum would inaugurate the public meeting.

Malankara Metropolitan would preside over the meet.

General secretary of the Nair Service Society P.K. Narayana Panicker, Archbishop of Changanassery Mar Joseph Powathil, Pro Vice-Chancellor of the Mahatma Gandhi University K.P. Younuskunjuwould be among those who address the meeting.
