Houses given to evicted families

KOLLAM: The Quilon Social Service Society (QSSS) has given houses to the 12 families evicted from their hutments on the roadside at Asramam in the city two years ago. The eviction was to facilitate a road-widening programme. Following the eviction the 75 members of these families found themselves on the road. They were then accommodated on a school premises in the city. Then, the Kollam Corporation placed a request to the QSSS and its director Romance Antony agreed to construct houses. The houses were constructed on a plot at Palathara in the city provided by the Government. The houses were formally handed over to the beneficiaries at a function on Sunday, which was presided over by Kollam Bishop Stanley Roman. — Staff Reporter

NGO Sangh office-bearers

KOLLAM: T.M. Harindran and D. Babu Pillai were elected president and secretary respectively of the district unit of the Kerala NGO Sangh. The other office-bearers are S. Suresh Kumar, vice-president; P.V. Manoj, S. Somarajan and K. Anilraj, joint secretaries, and B. Jayaprakash, treasurer. - Staff Reporter.

Technical symposium

KOLLAM: The Department of Electronics and Communication of the TKM College of Engineering will organise a national-level technical symposium on the campus on October 12 and 13. `Sameeksha-06' will comprise paper presentations, quiz, circuit designing and troubleshooting, engineering problems and work model contest. The event will be inaugurated by Dr. Krishnan, head of NEST at Technopark in Thiruvananthapuram. President of the TKM Trust Shahal Hassan Musaliar will preside over the function. — Staff Reporter

Exhibition on Thrissur held

Thrissur: An exhibition on Thrissur town was held here on Tuesday by the All-Kerala Photographers' Association. About 100 photographs were on display. The members of the Association attended a workshop on digital photography conducted by Anoop Chandran, editor of Photo Club. Photographers P. K. Subramanian and K.V. Viswanathan were felicitated by district panchayat president K. Sreekumar. — Staff Reporter

Ten hurt in SFI-ABVP clashes

Thrissur: Ten students were injured in clashes between activists of the Students' Federation of India (SFI) and the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) at Vivekananda College, Kunnamkulam, on Tuesday. According to the police, the incident occurred around 11.30 p.m. Of the injured, six were SFI activists. The ABVP alleged that its members were assaulted by activists of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) from outside the college. The police said four activists of the ABVP lay in a pool of blood in the college. They were taken to hospital by the police. — Staff Reporter
