Staff Reporter

Condition not alarming, say doctors

  • DMO says threat of epidemic waning
  • Preventive steps effected at Thazhava and Karunagapally

KOLLAM: Two fresh cases of chikungunya were reported in the district on Tuesday. One was from Kollam city and the other from Karunagapally. Both patients have been admitted to hospitals but their condition is not serious according to doctors attending on them.

District Medical Officer Elizabeth John Zacharia told The Hindu that the epidemic threat has started steadily waning in the district.

Appreciable preventive measures have been effected, she said. The thrust of the preventive measures was at the coastal areas, which were feared to be vulnerable to the epidemic.

On Tuesday, preventive measures were effected at Thazhava and Karunagapally areas.

Dr. Elizabeth said that by October 13, the entire district would be covered by the preventive measures against chikungunya.

A medical camp was conducted on Tuesday at the coastal Pallithottam area in the city. More than 300 persons attended the camp. But no case of chikungunya or other fever was diagnosed.

The DMO also said that the condition of the 16 students admitted to the Pathanapuram Taluk Hospital, after developing symptoms of food poisoning on Monday, have improved. The students were fast moving on their way to recovery, she added.

    Homoeo camp

The Kollam division committee of the KSEB Workers' Association will organise a free homoeo medical camp on prevention of chikungunya on the Kollam Power House compound from 9 a.m. on Thursday. Association secretary K.V. Georgekutty has requested family members of all KSEB staff and the public to attend the camp.
