Government urged to change norms for selection of poor families

DEMAND: Workers of the CPI(M) staging a protest in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office in Gulbarga on Tuesday.

GULBARGA: The district unit of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) held a protest in front of the Deputy Commissioner's office against what it termed the brazen attempt by government officials to take back ration cards already distributed to Below Poverty Line (BPL) families.

Women take part

Numerous women participated in the protest led by State Secretariat member of the CPI(M) Maruti Manpade and District Committee member Gangamma Biradar. The protesters shouted slogans against the Government for taking away their right to purchase subsidised foodgrains by withdrawing the BPL ration cards issued to them.

In a memorandum addressed to the Deputy Commissioner, the party demanded that the Government change the norms for selection of BPL families by increasing the annual income fixed at Rs. 12,000 per annum to Rs. 25,000.

The protesters said that the Government should supply at least 50 kg of foodgrains every month to BPL families.
