CPI seeks Centre's help to sort out labour tussle

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: The Communist Party of India has urged the Centre to intervene and sort out a labour tussle in Gurgoan district of Haryana, alleging that Classic Golf Resort there had declared an "illegal lockout" and the authorities had taken some workers into custody.

"It is in this sensitive situation that am approaching youfor your intervention. The situation can only be diffused if workers are released from judicial custody, false cases made against them are withdrawn and illegal lockout declared by the management is lifted. Strong action is required to be taken against the culprits who perpetrated the attack on the innocent workers," CPI Parliamentary Party leader Gurudas Dasgupta said in a letter to the Prime Minister.

In the latest golf resort case in Mewat district, he alleged that an organised attack on the workers was "manipulated by the management on October 5" and the police instead of taking any action against the management arrested 77 workers the next day and sent them to jail.

More than a dozen seriously injured workers were undergoing treatment in various hospitals, Mr. Dasgupta said, adding that the district administration as well as the Haryana Government instead of taking action against the ITC management which owns the golf resort framed the workers under various sections of the Indian Penal Code including attempt to murder and intimidation.
