KURNOOL : Post-Master General K. Ramachandran presented the business development awards to 30 officials here on Tuesday. Fifteen awards were given for business development and 15 for Rural Postal Life Insurance business. He said, apart from core business activities, which was also a social responsibility, new business opportunities were knocking at the doors of the Postal Department. The large network of 1.5 lakh post offices located in every nook and corner of the country was the biggest strength of the organisation. Now, the Postal Department could handle sale and verification of passport application forms, accept income-tax returns and sell applications of various educational institutions and mutual funds.

He called upon the staff to be prepared for a new age postal activities, which laid emphasis on technology. The Kurnool region of the department covering Kurnool, Kadapa, Anantapur, Chittoor and part of Prakasam earned a revenue of Rs. 17.96 crores during 2005-06. This year, the department netted a revenue of Rs 10.61 crores so far. The region handled 1,20,605 ordinary mails, 34,241 registered mails, 1,669 money orders and 1,383 registered parcels a day. Last year, the Rural Postal Life Insurance wing clocked a turnover of Rs. 375.74 crores in the region. On the occasion, the PMG released a special cover on business development. Assistant Director Muniramaiah was present.
