HUBLI: Lawyers in Hubli have urged the State Government to recommend the name of Gangubai Hanagal, doyenne of Hindustani classical music, for the Bharat Ratna award.

The Bar Association of Hubli approved a resolution in this regard at a meeting chaired by R.G. Kodli, association president, on Tuesday.

Dr. Hangal is the senior most vocalist in India, who had created a record by continuing to sing even at the age of 95.

She has to her credit as many as 45 national awards and four universities had awarded doctoral degrees on her. Apart from her contributions to the field of music, she has involved herself in several social movements for the cause of the State and its language. She has even served as MLC.

The State Government should recommend her name for the highest civilian honour in the country. Association vice-president Mohan Limbikai, ad State Bar Council vice-president U.G. Nadagaddi were present.
