Train hits tractor at level crossing, 1 killed

NALGONDA: A man was killed when his tractor was hit by a train near Tipparthi village on Tuesday morning while he was crossing the railway track at the level crossing.

Satish Reddy died instantaneously after Falaknuma Express bound for Secunderabad rammed into his tractor. He died on the spot. The gates at the level crossing were removed some time ago. — Staff Reporter

Sheep run over by train

VIZIANAGARAM: Some 220 heads of sheep and goats were run over by a goods train at Kapusundaram in S. Kota mandal at 2 a.m. on Tuesday. The animals belonged to B. Sannibabu, P. Ramana, V. Appalasuri and V. Tatababu. As many as 150 more animals escaped with injuries, according to S. Kota Mandal Revenue Officer M. Ganapathi Rao. — Correspondent

Six injured in attack

KADAPA: A panchayat ward member Konella Chandrayya and five members of his family suffered severe wounds when a rival group attacked them with lethal weapons in Yerraguntla Dalitawada in Sambepalle mandal on Monday night. Konella Chandrayya, Konella Anjaneyulu, Konella Narasimhulu, Ete Gangaiah, Sarimadugu Nagaraju and Redamma were injured. The police booked cases against nine persons. — Staff Reporter

Huge haul of ganja

Kakinada: The special squad of the Prohibition and Excise Department's enforcement wing seized 520 kg of ganja valued at Rs.15.60 lakhs following a raid near Kothuru village of Y. Ramavaram Mandal on Sunday,The squad apprehended a group of 13 persons belonging to Orissa carrying ganja bags. The Assistant Commissioner said that the ganja was being smuggled from Orissa to Tirumalayapalem village near Korukonda. — Correspondent

Dance festival

KURNOOL: All-India Dance Festival will be conducted under the auspices of Nrutya Jyothi Fine Arts Development Association here from October 13 to 15, according to a press release issued by secretary Bhargava Kumar. Cultural troupes will present Andhra Natyam (AP), Mohineattam (Kerala), Bharatanataym (Karnataka), Odissi (Orissa) and Bhangra (Punjab).

One killed in blast

Kakinada: One person was killed on the spot and three others suffered severe burns when the crackers they are manufacturing exploded in Pedakandalapalem village under P. Gannavaram police station limits on Tuesday. The injured have been admitted to the Government General Hospital here. — Correspondent

Prisoner killed

Rajahmundry: In a clash between two prisoners in Rajahmundry Central Prison on Tuesday, Guruvindapalli Joji (30) of Ainagudem village of Pedavegi mandal in West Godavari district died when another prisoner Bellamkonda Arjun (33) of Janipalli of Amalapuram mandal, hit him with a stick on the head. According to Superintendent of the Jail A.G. Sainatha Reddy, the clash took place during lunch. — Correspondent

HYDERABAD: The AP State Teachers' Union has postponed the dharna scheduled here on October 13 in view of the assurance given by the Education Secretary that the Government is serious about issuing orders on some of its demands including. — Special Correspondent

Two die of dengue

KURNOOL: Over 15 persons were being treated for dengue fever in various hospitals in the city, according to information. Two persons died of the disease on Monday and Tuesday. The general hospital sources said cases were coming from neighbouring districts also with suspected dengue symptoms.-Staff Reporter

Stir against leasing

KURNOOL: Quarry workers, led by CPI(M) district secretary T. Shadrak staged a demonstration at the Collectorate here on Tuesday urging the authorities not to lease the quarries at Tadakanapalli in Kallur mandal to people other than workers. They said the authorities had tried to lease the quarries to landlords. They threatened to intensify the protest if the authorities persisted with the lease.-Staff Reporter

Two killed in accident

KURNOOL: Two persons died when a mini-van collided with a stationary truck near Allagadda on the National Highway 18 on Tuesday. According to reports, the mini-truck was coming with a load of vegetables from Chittoor. Abdul Jafar and Ahmed Hussain died in the incident.-Staff Reporter

Music fest

KURNOOL: Kurnool Medical College will hold music festival, exhibition and State-level quiz contest in connection with the golden jubilee celebrations of the college in January 2007. Principal Sudharamana said a knowledge centre was being set up at a cost of Rs. 2.5 crores.

Woman killed by paramour

SANGAEDDY : Thirty-three-year-old Kanaka Lakshmi a divorcee and mother of three was allegedly murdered by her lover K.Ramachandram in Siddipet town on Monday. The accused followed her while she was returning home after watching a second show cinema in the local Balaji theatre and smashed her head with a boulder. Ramachandram who was arrested by the police confessed to the crime. -Staff Reporter

AIYF meet on October 14

ELURU: The All India Youth Federation (AIYF) will hold its 17th district conference at Visweswaraiah Kalyana Mantapam here on October 14. AIYF State secretary G.
