LUCKNOW: The Nationalist Congress Party on Tuesday demanded dissolution of the Uttar Pradesh Development Council (UPDC) saying it does not represent all section of society. The U.P. unit president of NCP, Ramesh Dixit, told reporters that the Council promoted the interests of capitalists and expressed concern at the farmers' land being sold to industrialists at rates below the market price. He said the farmers were not being paid adequate compensation for their land. Condemning misuse of official machinery for promoting the business interests of capitalists, Dr. Dixit demanded that the State Government stop playing the role of a middleman. He said three important sections of society -- Dalits, minorities, especially the Muslims, and women -- were not represented on the UPDC, and added that without their participation development of the State was not possible. He dubbed the Council as anti-Dalit, anti-Muslim and anti-women. The NCP leader said that the UPDC, as well as the U.P. Government, were only concerned about development of the industrialists and entrepreneurs. He alleged that untold atrocities were being committed on the deprived sections, farmers and political workers by the present regime that believed in crushing popular and peaceful agitations. He said the NCP condemned "the unholy nexus between the law enforcing agencies and the feudal forces". He said his party would support all peaceful agitations. Stating that the NCP was an active political partner in the Progressive Jan Morcha Alliance, Dr. Dixit said the party was committed to finding a secular democratic alternative to replace the Samajwadi Party Government. "The NCP will also work for marginalisation of the BJP and the BSP," he added. He said the NCP would contest three mayoral and six Nagar Palika Parishad seats in the forthcoming local bodies elections in the State.
