BANGALORE: To motivate high school students to study the basic sciences, the Department of Science and Technology and Karnataka Rajya Vignana Parishat will hold taluk-, district- and State-level science quiz contests from October 28. Minister for Science and Technology Ramachandra Gowda told presspersons here on Tuesday that two students each from 9,462 high schools would participate in the event at the taluk level. A written test would be held at the taluk and block level on October 28 from 11 a.m. to 12.30 p.m. There would be 15 questions each from the physics, chemistry, mathematics and biology syllabi and 15 questions on discoveries, technologies and Indian scientists. Mr. Gowda said two teams (rural and urban categories) that scored the highest marks in each taluk would participate in the district-level contest on November 18. Teams that secured first and second places in the urban and rural categories in the district level competition would get cash prizes of Rs. 2,000 and 1,000 respectively. Four teams each from the rural and urban categories in each district would participate in the State-level contest in January 2007, he said. Teams that secured first, second and third prizes in the rural and urban categories would get cash prizes of Rs. 10,000, Rs. 7,500 and Rs. 5,000 respectively, the Minister said. For B.Sc. students in 526 colleges in the State offering the course, the department would organise exhibitions at the divisional and State levels, he said. Eight teams from each college could participate, Mr. Gowda said. The divisional-level contest would be held in December in Bangalore, Mangalore, Mysore, Shimoga, Dharwad and Gulbarga. Teams securing first, second and third places would get Rs. 3,000, Rs. 2,000 and Rs. 1,000 respectively, the Minister said. The State-level contest would be held in January and teams bagging the first, second and third places would get cash prizes of Rs. 10,000, Rs. 8,000 and Rs. 6,000 respectively, Mr. Gowda said.
