Bangalore: The Karnataka Public Service Commission (KPSC) is now set to follow the pattern of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) in recruitment and training and various other procedures. With this the KPSC will join its counterparts in some States that have already adopted the UPSC pattern to ensure transparency in recruitment and provide good training before recruits are commissioned as officers of the State administrative service. KPSC chairman H.N. Krishna told The Hindu that the commission, for the first time in recent years, would be recruiting over 200 officers to the 2007 batch of the Karnataka Administrative Service (KAS), and the selection process was expected to start in the first week of January. The KPSC recruited 345 KAS officers in 1998, but the procedure adopted for the recruitment was challenged in court and stalled the recruitment process for seven years. Even recruitments made in 1999 were stalled owing to the backlash of the 1998 selections. Mr. Krishna said the names of those who had made it to the 2006 batch of the KAS would be announced by December. In all, 84,000 candidates appeared for the preliminary examination held last month. The results were announced a few days ago. A total of 2,020 candidates were expected to appear for the final examination, of whom 101 candidates would be selected.
Number varies
The number of candidates selected to the KAS varied every year, and this was based on the requisition made by various government departments, he said. For the first time in the history of the KPSC, Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy would address the fresh recruits at a daylong workshop on October 12. It would be similar to the exercise undertaken by the UPSC wherein the Prime Minister addresses IAS and IPS trainees at Vigyan Bhavan in New Delhi every year. Mr. Kumaraswamy would be addressing 745 officers of the 1998, 1999 and the 2005 batches who were now undergoing training, Mr Krishna said.
