Minister to hold meeting on dengue

MYSORE: Minister for Health and Family Welfare R. Ashok on Tuesday said he had convened a meeting of officials of his department from all the districts to review the situation with regard to dengue in the State.

The Minister told presspersons here that the meeting would be held on Thursday. Dengue was yet to make its presence felt this year, but one suspected case had been reported in Gulbarga. The test results would be known on Wednesday, he said. — Staff Correspondent

No change in stand on English: Horatti

BANGALORE: Minister for Primary and Secondary Education Basavaraj S. Horatti on Tuesday categorically said that there was no change in the Government's stand on the introduction of English as a compulsory subject from the first standard in Kannada-medium schools from the coming academic year (2007).

Addressing presspersons after a meeting with officials of the Department of Education here, Mr. Horatti said the introduction of English as a subject had nothing to do with the medium of instruction. — Special Correspondent

Schools to be improved

BANGALORE: Six education districts in Gulbarga division are lagging behind in primary and secondary education on account of inadequate infrastructure, shortage of teachers and high dropout rate, according to Minister for Primary and Secondary Education Basavaraj S. Horatti.

The Minister on Tuesday held a meeting with officials, Ministers, MLAs and MLCs of that region to discuss ways to improve the quality of education in Gulbarga, Bidar, Raichur, Koppal and Bellary districts.

Mr. Horatti said adequate budgetary allocation would be made from the next year to provide basic facilities in schools in Gulbarga division. — Special Correspondent

Election of DCC presidents approved

BANGALORE: The chairman of the election authority of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee, Khan Ghufraan Zahidi, has approved the election of 20 District Congress Committee presidents.

They are: B.B. Chimmanakatti, Bagalkot; Rafi G. Bhagwan, Belgaum city; Abdul Wahab, Bellary; V.K. Patil, Bidar; Sharanappa Sunagar, Bijapur; D.M. Mallikarjunaiah, Chikmagalur; R. Manjunath, Chitradurga; S.S. Mallikarjun, Davangere; Nagaraj Chabbi, Dharwad Rural; M.L. Burbure, Gadag; Allamaprabhu Patil, Gulbarga; A. Manju, Hassan; I.G. Two MLAs nominated to Railway panel

Bangalore: Legislative Assembly Speaker Krishna has nominated Prakash Khandre and Hampanagouda Badarli, MLAs, to the South Central Railway Divisional Railway Consumer Advisory Committee for the Secunderabad and Guntakal divisions respectively. Two die of snake-bite

Raichur : Sangamma (50), wife of Mahanthaiah, was bitten by a snake in a field in Jalihal village in Sindhanur taluk on Monday. She died at the government hospital in Sindhanur town. The Turvihal police have registered a case.

In another incident, Mallikarjuna (20), son of Kalppa, was bitten by a snake while he was asleep in front of his house in Satekellur village in Lingsugur taluk on Monday. He died on the way to hospital. The Maski police have registered a case. — Staff Correspondent

Jewellery stolen

HUBLI: A jewellery shop here was burgled allegedly by the employees and gold jewellery worth Rs. 45 lakh was stolen on Tuesday.

The incident came to light on Tuesday morning. According to Paresh Rawal, owners of Mahashakti Jewellers, seven kilograms of gold jewellery has been stolen. He has named in the complaint Vikram who was employed by him and Babusingh who had brought Vikram to work. The accused, who were natives of Rajasthan, are absconding. — Staff Correspondent

Panel visits Tadari

Karwar: A Joint Parliamentary Committee for Energy headed by Gurudas Kamath visited Tadari, site for the proposed mega thermal power project, on Tuesday. It also visited Madanageri and Gokarna. Environmentalists, fishermen, industrialists and local people conveyed their opposition to the project. The committee also held a talk with government officials.

MYSORE: Minister for Water Resources K.S. Eshwarappa visited the Taraka reservoir in H.D. Kote taluk near here on Tuesday to review relief work following the collapse of one of the crest gates on Friday night. The Minister told presspersons that the report submitted by the Cauvery Neeravari Nigam official and gate expert Ramakrishnappa had said that defects in gate fabrication was the prime reason for the collapse.

Water supply disrupted

HUBLI: Water supply to ward numbers 24, 25, 27, 29, 30, 32 and 46 in Hubli on Tuesday was disrupted owing to repair work on the main pipeline connected to Rayapur reservoir, Karnataka Water Supply and Sewerage Board has said in a release. Water would be supplied to these wards on Wednesday at revised timings, the release said. — Staff Correspondent
